Thinking About Artificial Grass for Your Yard? Your Questions Answered (Part 1 of 2)

Artificial grass. Artificial turf. Synthetic grass. Synthetic turf. Different terms for the same product. Whatever you call it one thing’s for sure: you never have to cut it. It stays green. Your yard looks perfect. Here’s everything you need to know if you’re interested in creating a lasting luscious landscape using artificial grass.

How Long Does Artificial Grass Last?

Depending on the amount of traffic in the area where it’s installed, artificial grass can last for up to 20 years with very little maintenance. The grass won’t flatten or fade since it’s UV stabilized, which means it’s protected against long-term degradation caused by ultraviolet light.

How Much Does it Cost?

Artificial grass can range from $5 to $20 per square foot, installed. That investment can be made up over the lifetime of the product, however, with savings on maintenance like mowing, weeding, fertilizing, and aerating.

Is There Maintenance Required?

You will need to gently hose down your yard each week to remove any dust, dirt, or pollen. Watering also helps to prevent unequal distributions of infill.

As with real grass use a rake or leaf blower to remove leaves, branches, and any other debris. For pets, scoop up solid waste and hose down the area.

What Goes Beneath the Grass?

The area underneath the artificial grass is referred to as the “sub-base.” It’s usually a compacted sand/gravel mix, or in some instances concrete and asphalt.

Can Weeds Grow Through the Turf?

Artificial grass is obviously more resistant to weeds than natural grass. It’s unlikely but possible, however, that weeds can grow up through drainage holes in artificial grass if the planter area is not properly excavated, or if the sub-base is contaminated. To help deter weeds, a weed barrier underlayment can be installed.
