How to Keep Your Sanity When Moving With Kids

If you’re like most parents, you know that moving day is going to present some huge challenges. Whether you’ve bought a home for sale in Lakewood, Long Beach or any other area, here’s what you need to know.

How to Keep Your Sanity When Moving With Kids

Kids are a blast – and as a parent, you already know that. You also know that they can get into things faster than you can stop them, and that they’re able to figure out things that we, as adults, often struggle with. So when you’re moving with kids, keep these things in mind:

  • Let your kids know you’re moving as soon as possible.
  • Keep them busy by letting them decorate packed boxes.
  • Pack a “kid bag.”
  • Let your little ones say goodbye to your old space, their friends and their teachers.

Here’s a closer look at each.

#1. Let your kids know you’re moving as soon as possible.

Even if your children are small, they’ll figure out that something’s up when they start seeing you packing up or purging items you don’t want to take to your new home. It’s a good idea to sit the whole family down and have “the talk” long before the big day arrives. Kids love to feel included, so let them know you’re moving and that you’ll expect their help. Remember, too, that telling your kids that they’re “so big and helpful” can help ensure that they step into the role of helper – and it can help you keep them on-track when you really need them focused.

#2. Keep them busy by letting them decorate packed boxes.

Kids love to have a hand in important tasks, and you can let them know how important it is that you’re able to figure out which box goes where in your new home. Let them decorate all the boxes, if necessary. That way, it takes away the weird feeling they’ll get when they see their “stuff” going away. (Just remember to add your own labels, too.)

#3. Pack a “kid bag.”

Fill a bag or box (or multiple bags and boxes) with essentials that you know your kids will need. In fact, you can even let your children choose some of the essentials, like favorite toys, books and blankets. Keep the bag or box open and ready all the time – while you’re packing, during the move, and first thing at the new house.

#4. Let your little ones say goodbye to your old space, their friends and their teachers.

Let your kids take photos of their rooms, their friends from school, the backyard – or anything else that they know they’ll want to remember. They know what’s important to them, so turn them loose with your phone or camera for a while. Give them a little time to say goodbye to friends, as well, and if you can, think about throwing a going-away party.
