3 Things to Ask Yourself if You're Updating Your Backyard
When you're upgrading, updating or just rounding out your backyard - whether it's to sell your home or just so you can enjoy it more - it's important to make the best use of your space. Here's what you should consider before you decide on a project.
3 Things to Ask Yourself if You're Updating Your Backyard
When you're updating your yard, ask yourself these questions:
- What interior spaces have backyard access and backyard views?
- What features would I choose if money wasn't an object? Which features fit into my budget?
- How much space can I occupy with new features?
Here's a closer look at each.
What interior spaces have backyard access and backyard views?
Access points to your backyard are important. If there's a gate and a door from the house leading out, but you never use the fence (and always use the back door), you're going to want to focus some of your planning around the areas you travel through. You may want to consider adding a lighted walkway, for example, but it wouldn't make sense to start it at the gate you never use.
What features would I choose if money wasn't an object? Which features fit into my budget?
It's always okay to let your imagination take over for a few minutes; that's where some of the best ideas come from. In fact, you may end up coming up with great compromises between your wish list and your budget that way. For example, if you want to install a pool with a huge deck for entertaining, which can be pretty costly, you might decide to install your pool near your existing deck rather than at the other end of your yard.
How much space can I occupy with new features?
You don't want to cramp your backyard, but you do want to get as much living space from it as possible. Head outside and look around; if you want an outdoor kitchen, a swimming pool and a fire pit, you'll have to make sure everything will fit. Generally, you can come up with a good estimate by strolling around back there - and if you think everything can fit, it's time to start calling contractors and determining how large each feature will be in real life.
